Information about the Dyslexia Reading Center
The Dyslexia Reading Center of Central PA is a tax-exempt charitable organization based in Pine Grove Mills, Centre County PA, serving 15 surrounding counties.  At the Dyslexia Reading Center, students are individually tutored for an hour twice weekly after school and during the summer.  Instruction is based on methods specifically designed for those with dyslexia, a common learning disability affecting as many as one in five individuals.

Dyslexia is a lifelong condition characterized by difficulty with reading, writing, and spelling skills. Dyslexia is not a sign of low intelligence, but is an inherited neurological condition that can affect many highly intelligent and creative people. Most school systems do not have the resources for individualized instruction for students with dyslexia.  It is estimated that two-thirds of 12th graders read and write below proficiency levels and half of new college students need remedial instruction.

The cost of tutoring one individual student can be as much as $5000 for one year.  The Center relies on fundraising events and grants to cover operational expenses and provide scholarships to help defray tuition costs for students.

The Center also works to educate parents, educators and the other members of the community about the nature of dyslexia and how to access effective remedial services in our community.
