A little bit about Jamie and her family:
Jamie Barbarich Covol is a local mom, wife, friend, and the Autistic Support Teacher at Mount Nittany Elementary School in State College. Ten years ago Jamie was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Jamie's journey has inspired many. Jamie says, “This journey has been like a race with a series of hills and valleys. This year proved to be one of those hills. We are very optimistic about the future and are in no way complaining. We are very grateful that there are procedures to try. As always, you cannot control what happens to you but you can control your attitude. So today as I think back on that day 10 years ago and think about this past year we look ahead to this October 9th and the 3rd Annual Team Snap 5K. We hope you can join us as we “head for a cure” and fight to find answers for those facing brain tumors like me.”
From Jamie:
10 years ago our lives were forever changed when I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. A tumor so large that they were not sure there was much that could be done. But by the grace of God, this year I celebrate 10 years as a brain tumor survivor this July. In the skilled hands of a wonderful medical team I continue to search for the day when we can say we conquered this tumor. Until then we smile with the support of our wonderful family and beyond the moon amazing friends. If you are reading this we cannot thank you enough for the roll you play in our lives and the lives of our children. We would not be here today without your love and support. We often wonder how we got so lucky to be surrounded by so many amazing people. Each day is a gift and we know that more than most people. We do not take that for granted and we are very thankful for each moment we get together as a family. This journey has been like a race with a series of hills and valleys. This year reminded me just how wonderful people are. Not being able to drive for six months was a challenge. We do not realize how much we depend on some simple things until we need the help of others. We had so many amazing people rally around us and our family and take us everywhere we needed to go so our children never missed anything! It was a really wonderful experience getting a chance to spend time with people in their cars whom I otherwise would have never gotten a chance to talk with. For an update on my health, things remain relatively quite at the moment. This is wonderful!!! The daily headaches are still very present and have been for the last 21 years. This is the first year we really considered it from that angle. We continue to search for something, a treatment, a procedure, something to eradicate this tumor. We are very optimistic about the future and are in no way complaining. We are very grateful that there are procedures to try. As always, you cannot control what happens to you but you can control your attitude. Our children have really embodied this family motto as much as we have in huge part thanks to all of you and your participation in the Team Snap 5K the past two years. They really got to see how this saying came to life when everyone came together to support us. Over 500 people!! So today as I think back on that day 10 years ago and year we look ahead to this October 9th and the 3rd Team Snap 5K. We hope you can join us as we “head for a cure” and fight to find answers for those facing brain tumors like me. When I wake up each morning and look at my children, I have to smile knowing what a wonderful supportive community we live in and no matter what happens to me, they have so many people who love and care about them in their corner. Thank you for the continued thoughts and prayers you have been giving my family. We know it is not always easy to be our friends. It takes courage and bravery and we are so grateful for each and every one of you! As Braylan always reminds us; This brain tumor has allowed us to see just how much everyone loves us. We are so blessed. We will continue to live each day for the blessing it is with a smile on our faces no matter what. Thank you for standing behind us even if you were scared. It means the world to us. We look forward to seeing you there October 9th to run or walk with us with a smile on your face as we head for a cure!
